Masters Training Camp – Success!

by David Hubley, Camp Co-coordinator, Director of Coaching Development – CCNS Board of Directors

Skiers from across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick participated in a masters dryland training camp, organized in partnership by Cross Country Nova Scotia and Ski de fond Nouveau Brunswick; from June 13-15, at Les Aventuriers de Charlo, in Charlo, New Brunswick.

The camp was facilitated by Stéphane Barrette from Montreal. Stéphane shared his wealth of knowledge and skill which he developed as a former National team skier, and within various roles for Nordiq Canada.

Stéphane instructed participants on the roller-ski track, trail network, and classroom. Coaching topics included: ski striding, classic and skate technique on roller skis, and developing a yearly training plan – with all of the variables that need to be considered, such as the importance of strength and ski specific strength, exercises, and nutrition.

Not only did the participants learn valuable ski specific content from Stéphane – they learned from each other. Being around like-minded people for three days is a great way to share ideas, network, and hear what is happening within the Maritime ski community.

The hope is to offer another masters dry land workshop this coming fall in preparation for the Bill Gairdiner Masters Championship 2026, being held this winter in Fredericton, on the Wostawea Ski Club trails.

Thank you to Fran Robinson and Dave Hubley for making this workshop a reality! Fran is the masters representative for Ski de fond Nouveau Brunswick, and Dave is the Director of Coaching Development for Cross Country Nova Scotia. Thank-you to event supporters HUB Cycle and Rossignol. Special thank-you to Les Aventuriers de Charlo for providing the use of a great facility.
