Nova Scotia Racers Compete – 2024 Nordiq Canada Ski Nationals

by Cross Country Nova Scotia, Staff, Mar 13, 2024

GATINEAU, Q.C. – Nova Scotia athletes are competing against the country’s top-ranked skiers, at the 2024 Nordiq Canada Ski Nationals, being held at the Nakkertok Nordic Ski Centre, on March 11-14; a compressed schedule due to ongoing unseasonal temperatures and heavy rain. The event is organized by ENGNE (Évènements Nordiques Gatineau Nordic Events). More than 770 racers from 87 clubs, across 11 provinces/territories, along with international racers – will be attending this 96th edition of Nationals. Daniel Murray, head coach of the provincial ski team, is onsite providing direction and racing support.

Nova Scotia provincial team athletes registered include: Emma Archibald, SR W P/N, uOttawa Nordiq, Nordiq Canada Development Team; Milo Sircom-Brown, U20 M, uOttawa Nordiq; Lynden Doyon, U18 B; Adrien Doyon, U16 B; Suzanne Jackson, U16 G; Jonah McIntyre, U16 B; Ewan Miner, U18 B; and Cohen Norman, U18 B. SCOTIA XC Ski Club is the home club for our racers. North Highlands Nordic is the home club for head coach, Daniel Murray.

The majority of our Nova Scotia racers are experiencing their inaugural Nationals experience, including: Miner, Adrien Doyon, McIntyre, and Jackson.

Provincial team alumni competitors, include: Fiona McClure, Maggie McClure, Ogen Newcomb, and Colin Ward; all current members of Carleton Ravens Nordic Ski team.

Due to the effect of heavy rains and persistent warm weather, races have been organized on a 2.5 km course; on the homologated “Nakkertrak” training and race loop, which is supported by artificial snowmaking. Event planners and volunteers are putting in tremendous efforts to ensure there is coverage for competition.

Noting Emma Archibald was registered for one race, set for the first day of competition, which was cancelled due to course conditions. Archibald is travelling to Prince George to compete in the Para Nordic World Cup Finals.

Find the most accurate weather updates by checking AccuWeather for Cantley, QC. Course conditions and grooming will be communicated on the Nordic Pulse Nakkertok account and Nakkertok Trails X account.

Race Highlights:

· Cohen Norman (Halifax) finished 21st in 5 km freestyle. Norman missed progressing to sprint quarter finals by .47s; Norman secured 19th place in 7.5 km freestyle – in a very competitive field.
